Armageddon Expo 2018 – Wrap-Up

Posted by Amy Potter Oct 23, 2018 in Armageddon Expo,FIFA,NBA2K,Tekken

What a weekend it was! LPL had the pleasure of hosting the Playstation Plus Friendlies tournaments at the PlayStation NZ stand, where Kiwis at Auckland Armageddon had the chance to battle it out in FIFA 19, Tekken7 and NBA 2K19 to win some awesome prizes – and glory!

Our FIFA 19 tournament kicked off on Saturday with 23 players competing for the grand prize of a PS4 Pro Console, 12 months of Playstation Plus, a custom trophy – and of course, bragging rights. Featured players included Breakaway Esports’ Campbell “airbrn” Knowles and Oliver Xu, our youngest contestant of the day.

After 3 rounds of single-elimination knock-outs, we headed into our semi-finals. Fan-favourite airbrn was unfortunately knocked out, sending Alyaqdhan Alwahaibi and Oliver Xu into our intense finals match. Both contestants picked to play as Italian football club Juventus (featuring star player & FIFA 19 cover star Christiano Ronaldo) – but it was Alyaqdhan who triumphed with a score of 6-1 at full time.

Oliver didn’t walk away empty-handed: picking up a limited-edition camo Dualshock 4 controller and 12 months of PS Plus. For someone who hadn’t played the world-famous title since FIFA 17, we reckon he put up an awesome effort! Our third and fourth place players also took home 12 months’ worth of PS Plus. Alyaqdhan’s win in our tournament was his first – so watch out professional FIFA 19 players, there’s a new sheriff in town!

Sunday saw the launch of our Tekken7 tournament – arguably the most popular tournament of the weekend. Monty Betham, Kiwi sports legend and fighting game fan, came along as a ‘Friend of Playstation’ to help host our tournament. With maxed out online entries and full roster of 32 competitors by 10am, this was sure to be a great match-up.

Daniel “Danbanter” Saeidian of Breakaway Esports and current Tekken7 NZ champion was the name to beat. Reagan “Ghostchips” Kelly, prominent Kiwi Street Fighter V player, also featured in our line-up. However, Danbanter proved once again that he is the best in the country for good reason. In front of a packed crowd at the Playstation stand he took the win 3-1 and an awesome prize pack containing a PS4 Pro console, 12 months of PS Plus, and a trophy to add to his growing collection.

Our runner-up, Cobey (also known as “DrDUCC”) took home a limited edition DualShock 4 Controller and 12 months of PS Plus. Once again, our third and fourth place contestants took home 12 months’ worth of PS Plus.

NBA 2K19 rounded off our three days of tournaments, with 27 players pitching up on Monday to fight for the title. Thomas Abercrombie from the NZ Breakers came along to host as a ‘Friend of Playstation’ for our semi and grand finals. Once again, contestants would be battling for a chance to win a Playstation 4 PRO Console, 12 Months of PS Plus, and a trophy.

Sharaz “Tyceno” Aslam – a Kiwi Youtuber with over 270,000 subs – took out the title, whilst second place went to Corey “Domehead” Matchitt.

A massive thank you goes out to Playstation NZ for having us along to host our tournament as part of their booth & the awesome prizes up for grabs. Of course, we can’t forget to thank Armageddon Expo for putting on an amazing weekend – and to all of our special guests, contestants and viewers who helped make our tournaments such a success!

We’ll see you all next year at Auckland Armageddon 2019!
