eSports in New Zealand and Australia: March Preview
With March well underway, it’s time to take a look at all the upcoming eSports events happening here in Australia and New Zealand!
League of Legends
Weeks 6-9 of OPL Split
After a quick break in the OPL for the Intel Extreme Masters, action started back up this past weekend. Following plenty of roster changes the past few weeks (including a new Tainted Minds roster featuring ANZ exclusive players), Chiefs, Legacy, Dire Wolves and Avant Garde continue to lead the way.
Counter-Strike: GO
ZEN League
The $100,000 CS:GO League just announced the participating eight teams from Southeast Asia and Australia. The Mongolz, Reccca Esports, MVP PK, and JYP Gaming will make up the Southeast Asian half of the league while the Australian side will feature Immunity, Chiefs, Tainted Minds, and Dark Sided.
The league will begin official play on March 6th, with the first few weeks of the round robin being played out through the rest of the month. Matches can be viewed on ESL Australia’s official Twitch channel.
CyberGamer Pro League Autumn 2017
The CPGL Autumn pro league, the first of three pro leagues that will be held in Autumn, Winter, and Spring respectively, will feature eight of Australia’s top teams playing in Best of 2s.
The top two qualifying teams of every CGPL will move on to the CG Championship, held in November. In the meantime, March will see the final weeks of CGPL Autumn play, with two games scheduled every Sunday and Monday night starting at 7pm and 9pm (AEDT).
All the matches will be streamed live on Twitch. The top four teams will qualify for the CGP LAN in Adelaide, which will take place in April.
ESL Australia’s ANZ League Season 1
After we saw both Athletico and Funky Monkeys qualify last month, the bulk of action will continue through March. Week two through five will take place every Monday and Thursday night, and all of the action can be seen on ESL Australia’s official Twitch channel.
SMITE/Paladins
SMITE Oceanic Pro League
Season 4 of SMITE includes the expansion of the tournament into the Oceanic league. Split One, which continues through Match, will include a $10,000 prize pool. The top qualifying team will also earn an invite to the SMITE Masters event in Atlanta, where they’ll be competing for $120,000.
Games are broadcast on HiRezTV’s Twitch channel every Saturday and Sunday night starting at 7PM (AEDT).
Paladins Oceania Masters qualifier
The Oceanic qualifying spot for The Paladins Master LAN (taking place later this year in the United States) is up for grabs this month. Four teams will compete in a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams playing in a best of 7 series to claim their share of an $8,000 purse and a trip to the U.S.
