We’re extremely excited to be teaming up with Te W?nanga o Aotearoa (TWoA) gamers, who will will pit our reo M?ori skills to the test in this week’s Night Squad Te Reo special!
TWoA is partnering with us to see more reo M?ori incorporated into our live broadcasts as part of Mahuru M?ori and Te Wiki o te Reo M?ori. Mahuru M?ori started at Te W?nanga o Aotearoa in 2014 as a way of normalising te reo M?ori in everyday life. It was originally an initiative for fluent speakers of Te W?nanga o Aotearoa but has since grown to include the public and all levels of proficiency.
The challenge for the month, or for a selected time period, is that M?ori be used for all forms of communication and this year more than 1,000 people will speak only in M?ori during September.
New Zealand professional Fortnite player Twizz and our very own Amy Potter will learn the reo M?ori equivalent of popular Fortnite multiplayer phrases and words, then squad up and use them in our weekly Night Squad Fortnite runs!

“Mahuru M?ori and Te Wiki o te Reo M?ori is about normalising te reo M?ori. We want to see people incorporating more te reo M?ori in their lives ??' and video games are a big part of many peoples’ lives,” said Uenuku Winitana, Ng?ti T?wharetoa, TWoA-sponsored gamer and Pukana presenter.
