So i recently just bought a pc with a GTX 970 and i really want to upgrade it to a GTX 980Ti. But im just really unsure if it is worth the upgrade right now or should i wait for GTX 1080 to come out and hope prices drop? Also on top of this upgrade would my processor (intel i5 4590) bottleneck the graphics card?

(I live in Australia, just in case this might help)

Any suggestions is considered!
Cheers

What games do you play? CSGO etc are heavily CPU dependent and that 4590 won't perform better with a gtx 980 ti over a gtx 970. You could get a cheap 4670K and overclock it to a nice 4ish ghz.

wait for the 1080 to come out, its double the performance off the 980 and half the price aswell, it comes out at the end of this month, so id just wait for the 1080 mate. For CPU get the i7 4790 or i7 4790k if your overclocking, or if you upgrade your motherboard to a 1151 socket mother board get a i7 6700 or 6700k if your overclocking.

^^^ this

but go the second option if you have the bank to do it, as you might as well change over to DDR4, get everything changed, otherwise stick to the 1150 socket as it's still perfectly fine and will be for a while, but as it was said above, 4790 or 4790k upgrade would be nice with a 1080 gpu would be great for ages

Rofl what how is it half of the price? It's expected to retail at around 600USD that doesn't = half the price in my books... Also why would you recommend a I7 for gaming ? A I5 still performs great for 98% of all games.

OP unless you're playing games at 1440p and beyond the 1080 is possibly the biggest waste of money. There is overkill and then there is just stupid overkill the 1080 for 1080p is the stupid overkill

If you're only gaming at 1080p a 970 is fine, if you insist on upgrading i seen a 980ti go for $500 on some buy sell swap page on facebook lmao

wouldn't listen to a word this r3gzz cunt just said either, darkey is on the money

So if i was to leave my CPU and upgrade to a GTX 1080, would it bottleneck and become a problem then? Also how much is the 1080 expecting to be priced at?

Btw thank you for the suggestions everyone! I am currently leaning towards waiting for the 1080 to come out and then purchasing it, if the price is not too crazy.

Highly doubt it but @l_w_88 can give you a more precise answer

$599 USD for the normal 1080 and $699 for the founders edition of the card.

Hope to god you're not playing at a 1080p res and considering to buy that card, because if you are you're doing it extremely wrong.

What would i be doing wrong? is the card not meant for running 1080p? Is there something i should know about the card before grabbing it?

gtx 1080 will probs be about 1k
similar cost as 980ti but slightly out performing it in fps, also better power efficiency and some newer features included

why exactly do you want to upgrade your 970?

also any modern i5 will not bottleneck on a great majority of current games, very few will show significant differences between i5 and i7

the 1080 for 1080p is the stupid overkill

Quote from Darkey on the 18th of May 2016

That's not strictly true
ill agree most the time but as always, it depends!

yeah i5 is perfectly fine for gaming but why would you want to spend an extra $100 for an i7? who knows he might want to do graphic design or stream for that case its worth the extra money.

And why wouldnt you want to get the 1080 over the 980ti? with new releases of games coming out this year and next you'd honestly want the 1080.

Quote from r3gzz on the 18th of May 2016

Because in performance you actually see vs cost it doesn't make sense.

Who knows he might also work for NSA and needs a supercomputer for his needs better break out the quantum CPU's. He didn't state that he was doing either of those so no point recommending it.

And why wouldnt you want to get the 1080 over the 980ti?

Quote from r3gzz on the 18th of May 2016

Because unless you're playing at 1440p and beyond since that is what this card is marketed towards it's a stupid waste of money.

Rofl I'm also guessing you also believed that you would need sli Titan X's to run the new games when they where released as well?

OP if you really want to upgrade get the 1070 the card will be a lot better value wise and you will still get the stupid amount of features that Nvida is offering.

You actually might want to re read the post before you call somebody a spastic.

with a GTX 970 and i really want to upgrade it to a GTX 980Ti

Quote from Nikzzx on the 17th of May 2016

Like this part right here I don't see him asking should he upgrade to a 980 do you ?

simple question which is better 980 or 1080?

Quote from r3gzz on the 18th of May 2016

Well since he isn't asking for a comparison between a 980 and a 1080 I don't see how that has anything to do with it. Or in your words are you to much of a spastic to realize that ?

And then there is a final thing at the bottom of his post it says Any suggestions is considered!.See i'm suggesting he shouldn't listen to your stupid advice because put plainly you're a spastic
