I would highly recommend iinet , Internode and TPG from personal experience. TPG are great for the price, just ignore the negative publicity on congestion - Telstra get just as much if not more. With all these ISP's, on ADSL 2+ I've experienced higher downstream and (especially) upstream speeds than I did with Telstra, and less connection drop outs. Not to mention Telstra is known for speeds slowing down alot during peak times (say 5pm-10pm).
All ISP's have their complaints, like Big's post above, and while some people may have a great connection in some areas with one ISP, they may have a slower connection and drop outs with another. It all depends on the type of DSLAMs they use and how packed they are, cabling used, distance to DSLAM, among other things.
Lastly, you're often better off paying a little extra ($20 or so) and getting a 6 month contract if possible, that way if things go wrong and the service is not as you anticipated, you are not in a contract for 24 months

#1 @ Internode.
Quality service with all tech support being either from Australia or New Zealand.
Great features as far as Unmetered Content goes.
Easy services to set up and fairly cheap with a wide range of plans.
The one thing you've gotta remember is every ISP will have issues no matter what;

Internode. Everyone elses international network is dogshit.
Anyone who recommends telstra is a fucking idiot who needs to kill themselves.
